When you decide to buy a tent, you have to consider many things, however the most important one is usually your budget or a preference for some brand. There are many tent manufacturers for you to select.
One of the main things that the prices reflect is the number of people that the tent can hold comfortably. It makes sense that, all other things being equal, that a 6 person tent would cost more than one for single occupancy.
In this article I have aimed to show the variety of choice and price that there is when purchasing a tent, by simply looking at just one popular camping retail website ('Camping World') from the UK. In terms of the variety within brands, I chose five fairly well known brands to see the variety based solely on size of tents (i.e.
number of persons that the tent is meant to hold).
One of the most popular brands is the Vango range. A quick search showed me that they have over twenty 1-2 man, over thirty 3-4 man, more than ten 5-6 man, at least five 7-8 man and one 9+ man tents. So that's close to seventy choices for just one brand.
Gelert is another popular brand and the same website showed five 1-2 man, seven 3-4 man, three 5+ persons, two 5-6 man and one 7-8 man tent. That's eighteen choices.
The Outwell brand showed five 1-2 man, nineteen 3-4 man, two 5-6 man, seven 7-8 man and three 9+ man tents. That's a total of thirty-six types.
Finally, the Robens range showed ten 1-2 man, sixteen 3-4 man and four 5-6 man tents - a total of thirty types.
I wanted to also look at the popular Coleman brand, but it was not stocked well in this store.
Therefore, I took a trip to the Coleman website for further research. This showed sixteen 'backpacking', twenty-nine 'family' and eight 'hinge door and lighted' tents. A total of fifty-three types.
A quick calculation shows that considering just four popular brands of tent, we have a choice of over one hundred and fifty brands of tent, dependent on size, based on one single online retailer. When we consider that one extremely popular brand (Coleman) was hardly stocked on that website, yet has more than fifty choices of tent in its range according to its own website, we can begin to see how much choice there is across all of the size and price ranges.
If we are to consider that one retail website across every brand stocked, the results and prices were as follows: fifty-three 1-2 man (£20-£350), ninety-three 3-4 man (£45-£900), fifty 5-6 man (£90-£1000), twenty-one 7-8 man (£320 - £1300), and seven 9+ man tents (£500 - £800). Remember that this does not include the fifty plus Coleman choices.
So overall, there is a vast choice of tent brands and styles to choose from, no matter what size or budget that you are considering. One thing is for sure, you are either going to have a lot of fun or a lot of patience when deciding which is for you!
before i go to silverstone, i thought i best practice erecting the huge 6 man tent that i shall be using just so i don't make myself look like a prat. in real time from starting the camera recording, to pressing stop, including getting the wron part of the tent 1st, the whole job was 25 mins. This does not include the guy ropes.
